SPECIAL PLUG-INS
Plug-ins (and active-x controls) are bits of software that add
functionality to your browser. This site requires the Shockwave plug-in to view multimedia
content integral to the site. In addition, you must install the Whip plug-in to view
AutoCAD drawings on line, the Smoothmove viewer to view photo-realistic virtual spaces,
and any VRML viewer to navigate the virtual reality spaces. SHOCKWAVE FLASH
Use of the Shockwave plug-in is strongly recommended. It is an
extremely common plug-in used on thousands of sites, and will enhance your experience on
this site and others. The other plug-ins are more exotic but far more impressive. If you
want a peek at some of the latest web technologies they are worth the hassle for their
"wow" value. Really. Nobody has ever written to say that they were not
impressed. Click for more information on what the plug-ins do and
how to download them (for free.)
SMOOTHMOVE
The Smoothmove viewer places you in a photorealistically
rendered space and allows you to pivot 360 degrees and look up and down. It gives you a
very good feeling of what it would like to stand in the actual space.
As of this writing the Smoothmove viewer is 823 KB and takes
approximately 5 minutes to download on a 56K modem. Click here
to download the Smoothmove viewer. Once the viewer is downloaded, the Smoothmove file
itself should load in about three minutes.
VRML
The VRML viewer allows you to navigate around and actual 3D
model of the space. This technology allows you to move from room to room and floor to
floor just as you would in a real space. It also allows you to "study" the model
from the outside as if you were turning it in your hands. I have chosen a project that
lends itself well to both.
I recommend using the XXXX viewer. It is approximately XXXX KB and
takes approximately XXXX to download on a 56K modem. Once the viewer is downloaded, the
VRML file itself should load in about XXXX seconds. Once loaded, you can travel anywhere
within the model in real time. Movement is smooth and quick, even on a fairly slower
machine. Your coordination will probably be the only thing limiting the speed at which you
move. Click here to download the XXXXX viewer.
WHIP!
The Whip! viewer is probably the least impressive but most
useful of the three. It allows the user to study floor plans over the internet. Not only
can you open a picture of the plans, but you can zoom in and pan around the plans. If your
architect is really cool he or she may have sprinkled camera icons throughout the plans
that link to rendered images and Smoothmove panoramas of how the space will look from that
vantage point. If he or she is really, really cool there may even be a link to a VRML
model you can explore once you have the lay of the land figured out.
