PERSPECTIVE FROM CORNER
The new Borders Books is historic in spirit to meet the strict
design criteria of San Diego's Gaslamp District while utilizing contemporary detailing to
acknowledge its modernity. Brick veneer, a copper patinaed storefront, and precast
concrete panels enliven the elevations. |

PRECAST BASE DETAIL
The patterning of the precast panels on the piers and
storefront bays provide visual interest at the pedestrian level. Their composition
contributes to a sense of human scale. |

TYPICAL BAY LOOKING UP
A dramatic view of a storefront bay illustrates the sheltering
effect of the canopies. The lightness in their material and form contrasts with the
masonry to soften the facade. The thin, elegant, and arcing framing slides cleanly
past the storefront bay, while it is being pinned between the large masonry piers. |

TYPICAL BAY ELEVATION
This partial elevation reveals the variety of textures and
materials of a typical bay - precast panels, brick, concrete masonry block, perforated
metal awnings, and copper patinaed storefront. Taken together these bays provide a subtle
modulation of form, color and shade. |
