BEFORE
A chaotic 1960s assemblage of boxes with overhanging hipped
roofs. Amazingly, the second floor in not accessible from the interior of the house
but via a narrow exterior stair in the side yard. I was originally hired to add an
interior stair. |

PROPOSED INTERVENTIONS
The stair addition was tricky due to the spaces that must be
served by the stairs, each at a different elevation and angle. In addition to the
stair the owner wanted to "clean up" the exterior and give the house a more
contemporary look. |

|
STAIR WEDGE
The stair was conceived as a path meandering through the space
between the two major volumes of the house. The interstitial wedge that the stairs
occupies is to be tall, open, and full of light. |

|
STAIR DETAIL
A trip up the stairs goes from a typical dark hallway, through
the wedge, into a low, dark landing in the opposite building, back through the wedge, and
finally into the short hall to the master bedroom. |

MASTER BATH AXONOMETRIC
We were then commissioned to utilize the abandoned exterior
stair landing and hallway for a master bathroom addition. The existing master bath
was in the room at the far right. |

|
SHOWER/LAVATORY
ELEVATION
The master bath is a clean contemporary composition of natural
materials and architectonic forms. |
